National History

 

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority was founded on the predominately white campus of Butler University on November 12th, 1922. During a time when education for African Americans was difficult to attain, seven school teachers by the names of Mary Little, Vivian Marbury, Bessie Martin, Cubena McClure, Dorothy Whiteside, Nannie Johnson, and Hattie Redford organized this sorority. Since its establishment, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority has grown into an organization with more than 85,000 members.

Chapter History

​

The Eta Tau Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was charted on April 28, 1978, at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Ms. In the Spring of 1978, twelve young women by the names of  P. Bridges, J. Clerk, R. Griffin, F. Haywood, S. Husband, D. Johnson, J. McCullum, K. Quince, l. Sanders, L. Shelby, B. Sibley, and T. Taylor chartered this chapter. Together, they assembled an organization that would change the campus of Southern Miss forever. Our charter members believed in the ideas of sisterhood, scholarship, and service, and stood behind the slogan, "Greater Service, Greater Progress."
